There was a time not too long ago when America was a premier power on the world stage. Other countries looked to us for advice, assistance and protection. Not because we gave blindly to causes and countries we did not understand but because we were the strongest country in the world and it was the right thing to do. It was a time when not only did the citizens have a deep respect and trust of the country but of our leaders. It was a time where all Americans were proud to be Americans. When you knew who your enemies were and who your friends were. It was a time when you could keep your doors unlocked at night, when people rarely feared for their safety from random acts of violence.

Profiles in terror
by Joseph WhalenRecent legislation sponsored by New Jersey Congressman Rush Holt has shined the light on one of the most misunderstood and stigmatized methods of law enforcement and security practices out there, profiling. While racial profiling has had it’s day in court and been shot down by our legal system as discriminatory this does not negate the fact that it is a proven and effective method for identifying potential threats and preventing criminal activity before it happens. However, regardless of that proven track record it has been deemed that such practices are contrary to the freedoms afforded by the Constitution of the United States. Of course, when this practice was challenged it was specifically with regard to traffic stops by police officers during drug enforcement raids on African Americans.

by Joseph WhalenIt’s been over ten years since the proverbial Dot-Com bubble burst and sent tech stocks tumbling. This monumental event resulted in a culling of the heard. Huge tech companies were swept up into large corporate conglomerates and the field of tech savvy contenders were quickly paired down and the weak eliminated from the competition. Most of this was the result of the over inflation of company valuations by economists who were either over eager to make money, completely missed the boat on what makes a company successful and worth money, or simply went with the pack in their recommendations.

by Joseph WhalenIt boggles the mind to think that our legal system is setup in such a way that an individual with this kind of driving record over this span of time has not been taken off the streets and locked away for the greater good of the general population. With the awareness of drunk driving so prominent in today’s society and the known tragedies it has caused and continues to cause what excuse can there be to allow someone like this to accrue four incidents in just over a month?

With the meteoric rise of social network on the internet having invaded our computers, phones, tablets, televisions and just about everything we’re exposed to the question of privacy has quickly come to the forefront. Having grown at amazing and unpredicted speeds sights like Facebook, Twitter, FourSquare and others have exposed us and a great deal about ourselves to the world at large. That grown in popularity was met with an equal lack of concern for how that information we volunteered was secured and controlled once we put it out there for all to see.

A recent controversy has risen regarding the wife of Presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s wife advising the would be president on women’s issues. The question of whether the wife of a multimillion dollar political powerhouse really has the right to advise him on what the typical issues are the women face on a day to day basis. Political strategist Hilary Rosen fired a shot across Ann Romney’s bow when she accused her of never having worked a day in her life, in a not so veiled attempt to question her credibility on the subject.

The State of New Jersey’s law allowing the state to confiscate unclaimed property from a variety of sources including inactive bank accounts, unused travelers checks and gift card balances is being expanded. What was essentially legalize theft before is now akin to legalized pick pocketing. Now the state will require sellers of gift cards to collect the ZIP code of the purchaser. Thus making it easier for the state to lay claim to any unused funds on such cards after two years.

Having suffered an embarrassing amount of bad press for lax security and fraudulent license issuance the State of New Jersey cracked down on the whole drivers license system and became the first in the nation to adopt the newer and more strict requirements for digital drivers licenses just a few short years ago. This was followed up with a few modifications to even further minimize fraud and ensure individuals are who they say they are thought technological upgrades such as facial recognition. Of course as with all security measures implemented in the public sector since nine eleven these improvements in security came with a price, namely convenience. No longer could an individual simply renew their license by mail. No longer was a non-photo license an option. Now you had to trek into your local motor vehicle office brandishing reams of paperwork to prove you were who you said you were.
